Depends of the barcode scanner. Some are capable of scanning the following:

1D barcodes, QR codes, Postal codes, Composite Codes, Photos, Documents, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Images, PDF417, Signatures, Direct part marks.

Some of the scanners are also capable of scanning poor quality, dirty or damaged barcodes or those under shrink wrap or on a digital screen.
